"As a former Halfords bike mechanic I have always rated this bike in its various guises over the years. It is light, well built, has great quality components and a sleek look. My only two criticisms were the seat, which I felt was a bit hard, and the fact that the front mech has a three speed shifter for a two speed chainset. I realise it is probably very difficult to get a two speed in mountain bike shifter style so can't blame the designers for this."

"I purchaced my hybrid from the GT Yarmouth store a few weeks ago.
The guy on the till at the time was very good and a pleasent chap.
I picked up my bike the next day after ordering online (there was slight confusion as in the email i recieved it was stated that the store would call me to let me know when my bike was built and ready, I didnt get a call from the store, but it wasnt a problem."

"Well where do I start, I have a a carrera titan mountain bike and after upgrading this bike for offload trails then road cycling I realised I needed a carrera road bike, lucky last one in local halfords.....had the bike a few weeks and very impressed so far....I have been used to a 20 kilo plus bike trying to keep up with lads on 10 kilos road bikes and by god this bike is quick....read some comments about wheels being too heavy....this is nonsense as the bike is light enough to happily do 15-20 miles an hour with not to much effort.
On a negative the tyres have poor grip..going round Bents with damp surfaces tyres just don't cut it....will upgrade these soon....
All in all a good bike for the money....this is my second carrera now and the first one is still going strong.....love the make.....hopefully bike continues to impress...even after a 100 miles bike was sold.....a new gel seat would be good as well."

"A lot of reviews of bikes are written by people who have purchased a bike, been out for a 5 mile ride the same afternoon, then feel the need to express their opinions on it. A more balanced review would be from someone who had used the bike for a few months, worked out all the little niggles, then proceeded to write the review. This is why I've waited until now to review this bike.
I bought the bike in April 2012 purely as a means of commuting. I don't ride a huge distance, just shy of 16 miles per day. I'm now coming up to 2000 miles on this bike, and can honestly say I'm blown away by the value for money this bike provided. There are a few features I've added purely for my own personal benefits, but this bike could be used straight out of the box for many years without letting you down.
How fast is this bike? If you're used to a mountain bike you'll be shocked how much quicker this is! I can regularly top over 30mph, even with panniers on. The gearing is just about right, you can get up the steepest of hills with the greatest of ease, and once in highest gear it really flies. I can keep up with the general traffic and most road bikers. This bike is great for both road and cycle tracks the tyres are spot on for both. I've tried it on rougher terrain but it's really not designed for it.
I've added a Topeak Super Tourist pannier rack to use a drybag, and despite a few worries that the rack may not fit due to the flared rear arms, it fits perfectly.
I've also added a set of Shimano SPD pedals to use with my MTB shoes. I can't really comment on the quality of the stock pedals as they were swapped over with the first few days. All I can say about them is that they seemed fine enough, came with toe clips, but no straps. Not sure if this is normal or not?
Many other reviewers have complained about their feet hitting rear stays, but I've never had a problem with that. I suppose by using SPD pedals and shoes my feet are in the optimum position and can't slide further back than they should. I wear size 44 shoes, often with waterproof overshoes and it's never been an issue.
A lot of reviewers have complained about the handlebar grips being of poor quality and hurting their hands, and the seat being too hard. I've never found a problem with these things, as I always wear gloves and padded shorts or tights. As with many things, if the proper gear isn't used, then you can't expect to get the best out of it. I personally think that the grips are absolutely fine for the job (providing your wear light gloves of course), and the seat is just about right for this style of bike. I wouldn't change either, although I would perhaps add a set of bar ends for prolonged riding, so the grips may need to be changed in that case.
I'm still on the original set of Kenda 700 x 28 tyres, and even with 2000 miles on them, there's still plenty left - I won't be changing them any time soon. I did swap the inner tubes out for a pair of slime filled ones, but that's purely because I was getting at least one puncture per week on my commuting route - this is no reflection on the quality of the bike.
The brakes are excellent, they stop you like hitting a wall! I've had to strip them down and clean them with disc cleaner a couple of times as they were squealing a bit. This is really easy and only takes ten minutes. I do it as part of my regular maintenance and cleaning routine, it keeps them tip-top.
One complaint I do have, and although it's not major, it does bug me - the is no guard on the crank. When I'm wearing shorts or tights it isn't a problem, but when I have my cycling trousers on they catch on the big gear and front mech quite a lot. This could be solved be adding a plastic guard which covers the large gear and mech. I get around this by using a cycle clip on my right leg, but it is surely a right royal pain if I leave the house and forget to put it on. Much cursing ensues!
The cycle bell is poor, it just gets in the way. Wouldn't take a minute to swap it to something a little more substantial, though. The tapered handle bars make mounting lights a little awkward, but a little perseverance pays off.
Overall, this bike represents fantastic value for money at it's regular price, but especially so when it's on offer. If you can bag this bike whilst it's on offer, then don't hesitate to do so - put the money you've saved towards some quality clothing and you won't go far wrong. Would recommend this bike to anyone, without reserves!"

"Excellent modern lightweight bike for roadwork, but will cope with canal routes if ridden carefully.
I've found it fast and capable for the London to Brighton with no adverse affects on a 60 year old.

"This bike is awesome. It is light weight and fast. Breaks are excellent. Although the breaks are making a noise for which I have the inconvenience of having to go back in store for but overall I love riding it. I do advise a seat a cover. You will feel every little bump you go over so do not expect too much comfort. A little disappointed with the price increase but I guess Halfords will dramatically reduce soon."

"The bike is solid yet light weight. I am a big lad and it copes with my weight easily. The gears are well balanced with just the small front cog offering enough variation for a beginner like me. Despite reading all of the reviews, I was still surprised just how fast the bike is. I was thinking I would need to be careful up and down curbs but it is handling it very well. The brakes are very good and it feels stable at higher speeds. The handle grips are less than comfortable (but very grippy) and you will need to use gloves when riding.
My negatives are to do with the accessories (lack off). I wanted to use the bike with a child seat, but it does not support a center stand to be fitted so I can put my child on it without it leaning on me.
There is not a 'whole wheel' mudguard that fits the bike and I have had to fit BMX style mudguards that (in my view) spoil the look of the bike.
The handle bars taper from the middle, limiting the choice/layout of lights, speedo and bell."

"I didn't think getting this hybrid would make too much of a difference from the one I had but it has. It's so much lighter, smoother & less force needed to push the pedals round! It's knocked big chunks out of my times on even the shortest routes I do like commuting to work (2.5 miles). Highly recommended."

"I was looking for something a bit quicker than my steel framed tank that I was commuting to work on. I choose the Gryphon as it had disc brakes and was fed up hoping I was going to stop in time in the wet with my old bike. After an initial few problems setting the bike up, I am more than happy with it. I have now covered 1,800 miles and apart from snapping the chain twice have had no other problems. I fitted SPD pedals from day 1 and my size 11 feet have not caused any problems, I use Scott MTB shoes and Specialized Sport and haven't encountered any catching of the frame. There have been comments about the saddle, yes it is firm but I prefer this to a squishy gel seat, you get more feedback from the back wheel which I like. Over all very happy with my purchase and hopefully this one lasts for another few thousand miles."
